RE: Upcoming Event: Striking a Balance Workshop, May 28, 2009

Transportation: Expanding Alternatives for the 21st Century

Striking a Balance organizers announce that our fifteenth forum has been scheduled to take place at the VFW Hall on the Washington Junction Road from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 28. Participants are encouraged register by Friday, May 22. A registration fee of $17.00 will include a light meal and materials. Please note that doors will open at 5:00 for registrations; the program will begin at promptly 6:00 p.m.

• Dan Stewart, Maine Department of Transportation Bicycle and Pedestrian Planner who will speak about "Complete Streets", or ways we can accommodate multiple forms of transportation.
• Carey Kish will discuss GoMaine, a program to assist people in car-pooling, van-pooling and transit services. .
• Paul Murphy will talk about Downeast Transportation and the Island Explorer, highlighting ridership trends and opportunities to expand transit services in Hancock County.
• Linda Belfiori, Director of Transportation Services at the Washington Hancock Community Agency will describe transportation programs to meet the needs of a variety of riders that cannot drive to needed services.

Striking a Balance was developed to address issues related to growth and development in Hancock County. Striking a Balance has been very well received in Hancock County, often attracting more than 100 participants consisting of municipal officials, real estate agents, code enforcement officers, developers, students and members of the community at large. Partners in this ambitious effort include the Hancock County Planning Commission and the Down East Resource, Conservation and Development Council.
