Two Household Hazardous Waste Events Scheduled
The Hancock County Planning Commission announces two household hazardous waste collection events scheduled for late summer 2006, when residents from sponsoring communities will be able to dispose of a limited amount of hazardous materials at no cost. Examples of materials that will be accepted include household cleaners, oil-based paint, used motor oil, pesticides, herbicides, and photo chemicals. Mercury-containing items also will be accepted at this year’s events. Examples of universal waste include fluorescent light bulbs, rechargeable batteries, mercury thermometers, and computer monitors.
The first collection is scheduled for August 26 at the Ellsworth High School. The next collection will be held at the Mount Desert Island High School on October 28. Individuals will be required to pre-register with their town office or transfer station.
